Thank you to everyone who attended Third Wednesday in April!

There are a number of different initiatives happening in and around Darwin at the moment! It was fantastic to hear from Jo Smallacombe, Director Cities, Karen Vohland, Executive Director Communications and Engagement, Department of the Chief Minister and Professor Lawrence Neild, Professor of Architecture at the University of Newcastle.

We also heard valuable insights from Daniel Logan and Anthony Pizanias from Mobi and Jesse Leal from City Savvy, who are both passionate about improving Darwin and contributing to Creating a Better Darwin.

We are flying through 2019, with our February Third Thursday done and dusted. This month, we focused on the growing relationship between Shenzhen and Darwin and the opportunities this connection provides for two-way innovation and investment.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Shenzhen Showcase, especially our presenters Boris Shao on behalf of Shenzhen Economic and Trade Office in Australia; Stella Ren from Sunwoda Electronics Corp; Ian Hu from South Compass, Leon from Lavendar Bay and Joshua Sattler from City of Darwin. We would also like to extend a special thank you to the Shenzhen Economic and Trade Office for sponsoring this event and to the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) Guangzhou Dried Seafood and Nut Association delegation for joining us.

Paspalis China Executive Vice President Boris Shao provided an insight into the innovation and investment ecosystem that is dominating China and the Shenzhen Innovation and Entrepreneurship International Competition run by SETO.

The Shenzhen Innovation and Entrepreneurship International Competition aims to integrate innovation and entrepreneurship resources and help foreign innovation and entrepreneurship projects to connect with Chinese hi-tech industrial resources and expand the Chinese market for mutual benefits and win-win results.

Third Thursday January 2019

Third Thursday is back for 2019 and what an great turn out for the first event of the year! Thank you to Jason Howe from the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation and Tim Hill from AusIndustry. It was fantastic to see so many new faces made welcome by regular attendees. We are so excited to have been able to introduce our first cohort of Scholarship Members last night. Keep an eye out for introductions to each Scholarship Member over the coming days! There is so much to look forward too this year! It is an exciting time to be an entrepreneur in this economic environment.

Happy Throwback Thursday! We are coming up to the last Third Thursday for the year so we thought we would take a look back at the last 12 months of Third Thursday!

Once a month, on the Third Thursday we have invited you into our space to connect, collaborate and learn from our community of businesses, entrepreneurs, startup founders, stakeholders and partners. We are very proud of the community that we have created and loved seeing new faces each month, as well as plenty of familiar ones. It has been an incredible journey watching the development of the innovation ecosystem in the Northern Territory!

2018 has been an amazing year for the growth of the startup ecosystem in the Northern Territory, and we cannot wait for 2019.

Today marks the start of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2018, a worldwide celebration of events and competitions!

Every year, one week in November is dedicated to celebrating and inspiring innovative people all over the world. Thousands of events and competitions in over 170 countries aim to inspire millions to engage in entrepreneurial activity while connecting them to potential collaborators, mentors and even investors.

The Darwin Innovation Hub is excited to be a part of Global Entrepreneurship Week! If you want to get involved, join us for Third Thursday on the 15th of November as we celebrate our startups and entrepreneurs with a Startup Showcase!

This November will mark 11 years of GEW helping millions of people unleash their ideas to start and scale new businesses through Global Entrepreneurship Week. Beginning in 2008 with an emphasis on inspiring young people to make their mark, this movement has quickly grown to become a comprehensive effort that engages entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, researchers, support organizations and others collaborating to advance economic growth and innovation in more than 170 countries around the world.

Roughly 35,000 events and competitions will take place during GEW 2018 – connecting nearly 10 million participants to potential collaborators, mentors and even investors.

Third Thursday October – Catalysing Women Science program launch

Last night we had the privilege of launching the Catalysing Women Science program Northern Australia project in partnership with The Northern Institute, Charles Darwin University, Data61 and CSIRO.

50+ Northern Australian women scientists came together to celebrate the launch of this new project that will provide an intimate impact approach to career coaching and science entrepreneurship. The program will be tailored to women scientists and science practitioners who are keen to demonstrate and communicate the broader value of themselves and their science idea, and be supported to translate this into real-world applications.

Dr Wen Wu, Research Analyst, Data 61, CSIRO shared her knowledge and insight of digital megatrends. Dr Wu is a scientist who evaluates further risks and opportunities associated with digital and economic disruptions.

Director, Northern Institute, CDU, Professor Ruth Wallace explored the changes and opportunities happening for women’s science in Northern Australia.


The program has been funded through the Australian Women in Stem and Entrepreneurship programme and will be delivered in partnership with Northern Institute, CDU, CSIRO & DIH

It was a pleasure to hear from Danielle Storey, CIO of Smarter Technology Solutions who presented on the Internet of Things last night at our September Third Thursday!

Danielle’s understanding and knowledge covered a wide range of IoT products and applications and how they are being implemented into everyday life. It was very interesting to hear how simple things we wouldn’t consider such as lighting and water have evolved to not only make life easier, but also collect data that can be used for in a variety of different ways to help solve many different problems.

Third Thursday August – Pitch Primer

Third Thursday August was all about Croc Pitch!

Thank you to our Entrepreneur in Residence, Dean Alle whose experience and knowledge surrounding pitching competitions as a judge and an attendee was incredibly insightful!


If you are interested in participating in Croc Pitch, we highly recommend you attend our pitching bootcamp, Croc Camp in September!

Croc Pitch is the first pitching competition to be held in the Northern Territory, and we cannot wait to see what ideas are in the works!

Thank you to everyone to attended Third Thursday July hosted by Mobi and NEM!

We were lucky enough to have NEM team member Jian Chan, from Melbourne who explained the NEM platform, future plans and how they are helping innovation.

What is NEM?

NEM is the Smart Asset blockchain. It’s more than a cryptocurrency, it’s a platform for managing data. It’s the easiest and most cost-effective way to bring blockchain technology to your business. Launched on March the 31st 2015, NEM has been rapidly expanding into many regions throughout South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. In 2017 they released a Community Fund worth 300m XEM to help fuel development of local companies.
